  • Emily Marcinowski (Strongsville, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) and Christa White (Rochester, N.Y./Spencerport) led the Red Flash against Norfolk State with 10 kills
  • Amelia Metzler (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield) added four aces against the Spartans

Philadelphia, PA- The Saint Francis Red Flash split their opening two matches at the Crosstown Invite, sweeping Norfolk State at Lafayette and falling in three set to Lehigh at Lehigh.

Coach McMullen’s Reaction
On Norfolk State

“I think we worked hard and had great energy in our opening match of the weekend,” Head Coach Sara McMullen said. “We kept our composure throughout, I think we need to clean up some things going forward, but I am proud at how we finished the match.”

On Lehigh
“That was a fun match.” We battled hard and had some really good rallies, I like the way we competed…We have a few things that we need to keep working on, like finishing out points, but this was a good building match for us.”

Norfolk Highlights

  • With 12 digs, Jenna Veres (Independence, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) set the new school record for digs with 1462 and counting
  • Paced by a Metzler ace and a kill and block from Marcinowski, SFU ran out to a 9-2 lead in the first set and never looked back
  • The Red Flash defense forced nine attack errors from the Spartans in each of the first two sets
  • An ace from Lexi Lambert and a Kelsey Roush(Johnstown, Pa./Richland) kill closed out the first set at 25-18
  • SFU broke open a back-and-forth second set with five-straight points, midway through the set and won six-of-seven points off of Metzler’s serve
  • Saint Francis took three of the final four points in the final set to finish the sweep and close out a back-and-forth set

Lehigh Highlights

  • Lehigh scored four-straight points to break open a tough first set
  • Kelsey Roush (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) had a kill and an ace to get the Flash within three late in the first set, but Lehigh pulled out the set 25-19 with a late rally
  • SFU erased an early Lehigh lead by winning five of six points to tie the match at 14, Roush had three kills during the rally
  • Sophia Esposito (Coraopolis, PA/Montour (Gardner-Webb)) block got the Red Flash to within two at 22-20 but Lehigh won some key points in long rallies to close out the second at 25-21
  • Lehigh raced out to a 7-2 lead in the third set and never looked back

LOOKING AHEAD
The Red Flash sit at 2-2 overall and will wrap up the Crosstown Invite back at Lafayette on Saturday afternoon against the home Leopards, first serve is set for 2.
