37-year old American Phil Dalhausser has been named the 2017 Most Outstanding Player on the men’s side of the FIVB World Tour for the 4th time in his career. Voting for the award is done by players, coaches, referees, and FIVB officials.
In addition to his Most Outstanding Player award, Dalhausser was also named the Best Blocker for the 7th time and Best Offensive Player for the 5th time.
Dalhausser and his partner Nick Lucena won the FIVB World Tour’s crowning event, the World Tour Finals, last week in Hamburg to complete their season. The team advanced to the quarterfinals of the FIVB World Championships as well, where they fell 0-2 to Russia’s Krasilnikov/Liamin.
With the three 2017 honours, Dalhausser has now accumulated 30 post-season awards. That’s more than any other player since voting began after the 2005 season, male or female.

Dalhausser and Lucena together earned $202,000, won 35 matches, and had an 87.5% winning percentage – all the highest on this year’s World Tour. Together they won titles at the Moscow and Gstaad stops and the World Tour finals in Hamburg.

In addition to being named the top male performer for the recently-completed FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour campaign that started in February in the United States on Fort Lauderdale Beach in south Florida and ended last month in Germany at the Swatch Beach Volleyball FIVB World Tour Finals presented by Vodafone, Dalhausser was also named the Best Blocker for the seventh time and Best Offensive Player for the fifth time.
With the three 2017 honours, Dalhausser has now accumulated 30 post-season awards.

Overall, Dalhausser has won more awards than any other player on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour since the start of the voting after the 2005 season. Other players with double-digit award totals are Americans Kerri Walsh Jennings (26) and Misty May-Treanor (13), Brazilians Larissa Franca (20), Emanuel Rego (11), Juliana Felisberta (10) and Bruno Oscar Schmidt (10), and German Laura Ludwig (11).
Dalhausser teamed with Nick Lucena to win the most events (three, Moscow, Gstaad and Hamburg) in 2017 for men along with topping the gender in earnings ($202,000), match wins (35) and winning percentage (87.5 per cent).
Since becoming a regular on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour in 2006 with 107 FIVB events to his credit, the 37-year Dalhausser ranks third all-time in gold medal finishes (37) and earnings (1,244,99) behind legendary Brazilians Emanuel Rego (256 events, 77 titles, $2,562,273 in earnings) and Ricardo Santos (229, 56, $1,901,183). His 80.9 match winning percentage (539-127) ranks first all-time among all male players in the 31-season history of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour.

Other 2017 men’s award winners included Evandro Goncalves of Brazil and Viacheslav Krasilnikov of Russia, who were named the tour’s Best Server and Top Defensive Player, respectively. In winning the serving award for the third-straight season, Evandro’s skill led him and Andre Loyola to the title at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Vienna 2017 presented by A1. The defensive honour was the first for Krasilnikov.

Dutchman Alexander Brouwer was named the tour’s Best Hitter and Bartosz Losiak of Poland was the Best Setter. Sam Pedlow of Canada was honoured as the Most Improved Player and Anders Mol of Norway was named the Rookie of the Year. Alvaro Filho of Brazil was selected as the Sportsman of the Year with 44-year old American John Hyden named the Most Inspirational.
