There was a bright spot for Kent State on Friday in their home opener, in spite of a 3-0 loss to Butler. Golden Flashes senior libero Challen Geraghty led all players with 20 digs in the match, which was enough to push her through the 2000-dig threshold for her career. She is the national career leader in digs among active players.
She ended the game with 2,013 career digs in 98 career matches (380 career sets). She needs 257 more digs to enter the top 25 that are officially kept in the NCAA Record books, which at her current pace would happen in mid October. She has a decent chance at cracking the top 10 of all-time before she’s done. Only two players (North Texas’ Camae Dillard and Michigan State’s Lauren Wicisnki) have joined the top 25 of all-time in this category in the last 10 seasons, owing largely to the fewer opportunities available in the rally scoring era.
“This is a great accomplishment for Challen,” said head coach Don Gromala. “She had a great match and played really hard. We plan on trying to put our defense around her so she gets a lot of attempts, but teams are starting to know that and do some different things on the other end.”
Geraghty still ranks 2nd on Kent State’s all-time career digs list behind Laura Jensen, who had 2,167 from 2004-2007.
