2017 CEV EUROPEAN WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS

The final three matches of pool play concluded for the 2017 CEV European Women’s Championships, setting the stage for the next round of the competition – playoffs.

Hosts Azerbaijan downed a steady German squad in four sets to secure their spot in the quarterfinals, bypassing the playoff stage of the competition. Azerbaijan was kind of an underdog in the competition that came out strong and played their opponents tough, going 3-0 in pool play, taking down Hungary, Germany and Poland.

Russia continued their dominance on the court with a five-set win over Bulgaria to advance to the quarterfinal stage after a 3-0 start. Controversy struck the Russia squad to start out the competition as their head coach was fired just hours before they began to play, but this has not stopped the team from going on a roll.

Finally, Turkey saved themselves from being eliminated from the competition with a four-set win over the Ukraine. Both teams were 0-2 heading into the final day of pool play, with the winner moving on to the playoffs stage and the losers packing their bags and heading home.

Now the playoffs have begun with starting with Belarus and the Czech Republic, followed by the Netherlands taking on Croatia today. The remaining playoff teams will battle it out tomorrow (September 27).
