Canada opens up their 2017 NORCECA Men’s World Qualifier run with St. Lucia at 5 PM (MDT). The Canadians will look to ride through a strong World League finish this year at the qualifier to earn their bid to the 2018 World Championships. St. Lucia has already competed in one day of play, losing at the hands of Trinidad and Tobago in straight sets.
Canada keeps a large base of the World League roster intact for the competition, with just two players that didn’t compete now on the roster. Looking to lead the way for the Canadians are John Gordon Perrin, Sharone Vernon-Evans, Graham Vigrass and Blair Bann. Perrin put away 54 points for Canada in the World League Final’s stage, while Vernon-Evans made a great debut for the national team with 53 points. Vigrass put away 46 points in the finals while also being named Best Middle Blocker. The team’s libero Bann was a strong fixture in the backcourt, earning Best Libero at the competition.
St. Lucia struggled in their first match against Trinidad and Tobago. Though the team had trouble handling their opponent, Joseph Clercent was a shining point for the squad, putting away a match-best 14 points on 11 kills, one block and two aces.
