We’re not even to the semifinals of the FIVB Women’s Club World Championship, but already players are breaking tournament records and joining elite ranks.
On Tuesday morning, Vakifbank Istanbul’s Zhu Ting recorded nine solo stuff blocks to break the previous record of eight blocks by Adenizia Silva of Brazil’s Sollys Nestle Osasco in 2010.
Vakifbank also broke a team blocking record in that match — which Vakifbank won in four sets over Hisamitsu Springs Kobe — with 27. That topped Osasco’s 25 in 2011.
But those didn’t last long. Hours later, Ana Carolina da Silva of Rexona Sesc Rio recorded 10 blocks in a sweep of PSL-F2 Logistics Manila.
In a match between Vakifbank and Volero Zurich on Thursday, two players joined the tournament’s “over 30s” club to double its membership.
Zhu scored 31 points for Vakifbank, while Olesia Rykhliuk notched 30 for Volero. Volero won in five sets.
Before Zhu and Rykhliuk, only two players had scored more than 30 points in a match: Ekaterina Gamova of Dinamo Kazan in 2014, and Tatiana Kolsheleva of Dinamo Krasnodar in 2015.
Also in that match, Vakifbank’s Milena Rasic tied Carol’s 10-block match record.
Pool play ends Friday evening, but the four teams advancing to the semifinals are likely Vakifbank, Volero, Eczacibasi Vitra Istanbul, and Pomi Casalmaggiore.
