#19 San Diego Stays Atop WCC With Sweep Of Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. – #19 San Diego remained in a first-place tie with #8 BYU in the West Coast Conference with a straight-sets victory over Portland Thursday night (25-16, 25-23, 25-14).  USD has now won 10 straight matches with four WCC matches remaining on their regular season schedule, none of which have a chance to make the NCAA Tournament in December.

The Toreros were led by junior outside hitter and Illinois native Lauren Fuller with a match-high 10 kills on 17 errorless swings (.588). Fellow Illinois native and senior setter Kristen Gengenbacher ran the offense well (team: .341) by dishing out 39 assists and adding 7 digs and a block. Freshman outside hitter Roxie Wiblin added 8 kills and led USD with 10 digs on the evening. As a team, San Diego made as many reception errors as unforced attack errors (6), while only missing 4 serves.

The Pilots fought hard and actually had a 23-18 lead in the second set before the Toreros ran off 7 straight points to finish the match. The 2-0 set lead proved insurmountable. Portland was led offensively by senior outside hitter and Oregon State transfer Hannah Troutman with match-highs of 10 kills and 5 blocks, four of which were solo. Troutman also added 4 digs and 3 of the Pilot’s 6 aces. Sophomore setter Cali Thompson ran the attack with 26 assists and had a team-high 6 digs. Portland outblocked USD, 7-4, and outaced the Toreros, 6-2.

PORTLAND, Ore. – The 12th-ranked USD Volleyball won their 10th match in row Thursday evening, sweeping Portland on the road 25-16, 25-23, 25-14. The Toreros posted a hitting percentage of .341 and had four players with at least eight kills, led by Lauren Fuller’s 10.

Fuller’s 10 kills came on 17 attacks and she had zero errors. Jayden Kennedy chipped in nine kills and Roxie Wiblin and Kaity Edwards each had eight kills with Wiblin also contributing 10 digs.

The Toreros had a .379 hitting percentage in the first set and finished on a 17-6 run to win 25-16. The Toreros fell behind 14-7 in the second set but finished strong. After being down 23-18, USD rallied for seven straight points to grab the second set 25-23.

USD’s offense was clicking in the third set as they had a .500 hitting percentage and cruised to the sweep with a 25-14 victory in the third set.

Kristen Gengenbacher had 39 assists with seven digs. Wiblin led the team with 10 digs with Merve Tanyel chipping in nine and Lizzy Tardieu added eight. The Toreros finished the match with 41 digs compared to the Pilots’ 27.

Portland was led by Hannah Troutman’s 10 kills. Cali Thompson had 26 assists and a team-high six digs.

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland Pilots volleyball team battled No.12 San Diego in a West Coast Conference match Thursday night in the Chiles Center. The Toreros topped the Pilots in three sets with scores of 25-16, 25-23, and 25-14.

San Diego jumped ahead 3-0 in the first set before senior Hannah Troutman and freshman Liz Reich produced and block, and Williams an ace, to come within one of USD. Troutman then added another kill and ace to level the set 4-4. Portland pulled ahead to 10-8 with kills from Troutman and senior Sarah Savoca, before the Toreros went on a run to push past the Pilots by three. USD continued to battle past the Pilots despite kills from Troutman and Katie Barker to move towards the final points of the first set. Ahead 21-16, the Toreros secured the final points with a four-point run to win 25-16.

Both teams fought evenly to start the second set before Troutman again pushed the Pilots forward with two aces and a block, with the addition of a kill from sophomore Katie Barker. Portland held onto the momentum after a San Diego point to claim four more for the 13-6 lead. The Toreros fought to close the gap with two short runs to come within two of the Pilots, but Troutman came up big with her fourth solo block of the night along with an ace from senior Morgan Robinson to make it 23-18 for the Pilots. USD stopped the Pilots there with an impressive seven-point run, ending the set 25-23 and taking the 2-0 match lead.

Again, with both teams even to start the third set, San Diego recorded two short runs to pull past Portland by four. Reich and Barker added two kills to break up Torero points, but USD answered with another lengthy run. With USD ahead 22-13, Pukis produced a kill to try and hold USD from match point, but the Toreros surged through the final three points to win the last set 25-14.

San Diego has three players above .500 in hit percentage. Troutman led the Pilots with 10 kills, and four blocks and Thompson had 26 assists.
