The three-time defending national champion USC beach volleyball team will close its non-championship segment of fall competition at the WAVE Beach Collegiate Invitational this Saturday (Nov. 18).
The Women of Troy will take the sand at the WAVE Volleyball Club in Del Mar, Calif., for a 9 a.m. PT dual with Cal Poly and a 1 p.m.dual with traditional rival UCLA. For the first time in the sport’s seven years, collegiate beach volleyball teams are playing exhibition duals during the non-counting or non-championship segment of the school year. USC faced several teams in a tournament in Phoenix, Ariz., to open the month of November and went undefeated.
The Trojans return several key players from last year’s championship squad including seniors Terese Cannon, Jenna Belton, and Jo Kremer. Belton and Kremer are each three-time national champions. Cannon owns two NCAA titles with the Women of Troy (2016-17). In her seventh season as the head coach of the USC program, Anna Collier brings a 146-18 record into the spring.
Last year, the top-ranked beach volleyball team went 38-1 in 2017 to capture the program’s third consecutive national title and back-to-back NCAA crowns. USC also won its second of back-to-back Pac-12 team titles and went undefeated on home sand (8-0) at Merle Norman Stadium. AVCA All-Americans Sara Hughes and Kelly Claes claimed the USAV Beach Collegiate Pairs National Championship following the conclusion of the college regular season, their second national title together (AVCA 2015).
