For the second straight season, the 2018 FIVB World Tour Finals will be held in Hamburg, Germany after a success 2017 finale. The finals will take place from August 14-19 at the Rothenbaum Stadium, highlighting the best-of-the-best beach players.
This is the first time that a nation has held the World Tour Finals more than once in the three previous editions (F. Lauderdale, Toronto and Hamburg) but Hamburg brought in promising crowds and can hold 66,000 fans in their iconic stadium.
In total, the finals will dish out $400,000 per gender with the grand prize being $100,000 for the gold medal winners. The 2017 World Tour Finals features American’s Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena taking home the gold for the men, while German’s Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst for the women.
Ludwig/Walkenhorst have had much success over the past year, as they won the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, the 2017 World Tour Finals as well as the 2017 FIVB Beach World Championships to cap off their season.
“We are thrilled to hear that the World Tour Finals are coming to Hamburg again,” said Ludwig. The Olympic champion added: “Beach Volleyball is hugely popular throughout Germany and especially in Hamburg. It is a place that we call home; we love it here and the support we received in the past two tournaments was unbelievable. I am sure the fans will come out in their numbers again to support us. We can’t wait.”
The 2018 FIVB World Tour has nearly doubled the events they will offer from the 2017 season and subsequently, the prize money has jumped from $3.3 million to $7 million on the year.
