Former Northern Arizona middle blocker and right side hitter Kasie Gilfert is headed to Colorado Mesa for 2018. Gilfert will be a redshirt freshman in the upcoming beach season as well as a redshirt sophomore for the fall season. She will have immediate eligibility being that she is leaving Division I classification and her previous conference for a new one in Division II.
At Northern Arizona, Gilfert redshirted her first season before appearing in 34 sets with 35 kills and 19 blocks this past season.
A 6’0″ native of Parker, Colorado, the transfer move represents a homecoming for Gilfert. She was a second-team all-state pick and a four-year starter at Legend High School, where she was the team MVP twice.
“We are excited that Kasie will be joining our program. She is a strong physical presence at the net. She jumps well, has a good arm swing and is a very good blocker,” Colorado Mesa indoor head coach Dave Fleming said in the team’s release. “With continued hard work and her competitiveness, Kasie could make a big impact. Our goal is to compete for championships and Kasie will help us get closer to that goal.”
Colorado Mesa went 17-10 indoors this past season, including an 11-7 mark in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. They also made the NCAA DII tournament in 2016. Last year’s roster consisted of three middle blockers and four players who can play right side. Of that group, one graduates.
On the beach, CMU went 5-10 in 2017. The spring season starts up in less than two months, as Colorado Mesa takes on Missouri State on March 12.
