Creighton continues to be a big player on the transfer market this offseason, as not only have they lost two players to it, but they’ve now tacked on three with the addition of former Marshall setter Madelyn Cole. A 5’10” junior-to-be in the fall of 2018, Cole will have two years left of play and is likely to be immediately eligible since she is changing leagues.
A native of Dallas, Texas, Cole came to Marshall after she was all-district four seasons with Plano Senior High School. She immediately made an impact as a true freshman in 2016, starting in 24 matches of the team’s 30 and logging 7.14 assists per set, 2.21 digs per set and 1.68 points per set.
Year two was even better for Cole as a sophomore, when she totaled 9.29 assists per set, 2.37 digs per set and 1.61 points per set. The loss for Marshall, who went 11-19 and 6-8 in the Conference USA last season, leaves them with three players who can play setter. It also marks the third player from the Herd to leave via transfer, although they’ve brought in four – mostly from the junior college level.
The other two transfers set to join Cole are defensive specialist/libero Grace Nelson and another setter in Megan Sharkey. Cole and Sharkey specifically helps ease the loss at the setter position for the BlueJays, as former All-American Lydia Dimke exhausted her indoor eligibility before heading to the beach at South Carolina and Jaclyn Taylor transferred out of the program.
Both Cole and Sharkey are likely to either compete for the starting role or potentially split it if Creighton moved to a 6-2, with graduate DS/S Kenzie Crawford potentially factoring into the battle. Creighton finished 2017 at 26-7 overall and won the Big East regular and postseason championships before making the second round of the NCAA Tournament as the #9 overall seed.
