Pope John Paul II Wins Third Consecutive Division IV State Title

The Louisiana high school state tournament crowned five champions on November 12, 2016 at Pontchartrain Center in Kenner, Louisiana.

Many teams competing were no newcomers to the tournament, with Country Day winning their 10th state titles, while Pope John Paul II won their third consecutive title. Picking up their fourth straight title was Teurlings, while St. Thomas picked up their fifth straight state title and Mount Carmel won their third straight title.

Division V

#2 seed Country Day knocks off #1 seed Ascension Episcopal for the Division V state title in four sets, 27-29, 25-20, 25-15, 25-16. The win brings in the school’s 10th state title.

Leading Country Day’s offense was Alex Smith with 19 kills, Kelsey Dinvaut with 13, while Kaci Chairs and Kenadi Maupin each added nine. In the back court, Leigh Mahar picked up 30 digs. Jenna Ibieta topped off an impressive career with 50 assists in the championship match and 15 digs for a double-double. Ibieta was also named as the match MVP.

Ibieta who ended her career with more than 5,000 assists, is a Tulane signee.

For Ascension, Addie Vidrine put down 16 kills while Ashlee Sandridge added 13. In the back row, Hannah Mattke picked up 31 digs and Alaina Hardy added 20.

Division IV

Pope John Paul II won their third straight Division IV state title with a four set victory over Hannan, 28-26, 20-25, 25-18, 25-21.

Milayne Danna dished out 47 assists in the match for Pope John Paul II, while Division IV MVP Ansley Tullis put down 23 kills and 18 digs for a double-double, while Camille Dedeaux added 19. Kendall Batistella picked up 20 digs.

To lead Hannan was Mikayla Boyer with 17 kills 15 digs, while Hailey Cabeceiras added 13 kills and 18 digs for double-doubles.

Division III

#1 Teurlings took home their fourth consecutive state title as they defeated #3 Ursuline Academy in four, 25-9, 19-25, 25-11, 25-16.

Having a dominating final high school match was senior Lexi Hebert, named MVP, with 17 kills, 24 digs for a double-double, also adding six aces. Sadi Jones added 10 kills, Jolli Hidalgo picked up 17 digs and Greta Collet blocked four balls.

For Ursuline, Macie Grubbs posted a team-best five kills, while Meghan Mailhos picked up 15 digs.

Division II

To take the Division II title  for the fifth season in a row was St. Thomas over Assumption in four sets, 25-22, 25-13, 23-25, 25-22.

Catherine Aillet put down 23 kills, while Meredyth Howard added 12. Defensively, Liz Whitehurst picked up 25 digs.

Leading Assumption was Hannah Brister with 29 kills and 13 digs for a double-double, while Camille Landry picked up 12 digs.

Division I

Mount Carmel took home their third consecutive state title over St. Joseph’s Academy in a five set battle, 26-24, 22-25, 25-18, 20-25, 15-11

Having a dominate match was sophomore Ellie Holzman who recorded a triple-double with 26 kills, 26 digs and 12 blocks – named as MVP for Mount Carmel.

For St. Joseph’s Anna Catherine Padgett posted 18 kills, while Elise Gasperecz recorded a double-double with 35 assists and 33 digs and Melanie Miller added 28 digs.
