FIVB World Tour – Kish Island

The 2017 FIVB World Tour kicked off last week in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to massive crowds and a Brazilian sweep – their 57th in FIVB World Tour history – of the gold medals.

This week, the tour rolls on to Kish Island – a men’s-only 3-star event in the tour’s new 1-to-5 format.

The small island in the Arabian Gulf off the coast of Iran hosted its first World Tour event in 2016 where they had 48 teams participate from 21 countries. This year, 32 teams will advance to the main draw (24 invitees, plus 8 from the qualification rounds).

The stop won’t draw the same high-profile names as last week’s in Ft. Lauderdale, with its big prize pools, did, but there will be a lot of domestic interest in an exploding Iranian volleyball scene. 4 American pairs will be playing as well. See the full list of participating teams here.

Below, see tour organizers discuss the new 5-star structure in general and Kish Island specifically.
