The Dutch men’s National Volleyball Team has appointed Claudio Gewehr as their new assistant coach on the staff of head coach Gido Vermeulen. He fills the role vacated when Ron Zwerver left after the Rio Olympics to take over as an assistant for Oregon State University in the NCAA.
Gewehr is not new to the Dutch federation (Nevobo) – since August 2015, he’s worked as a talent coach. He will now fill a dual role as talent coach and assistant coach on the court.
He’s previously held positions as the head coach of both the Belgian youth and senior teams.
Gewehr, as part of his duties as talent coach, coaches the talent team Papendal that plays in the premier league.
Gewehr served as a fill-in for Zwewrer during a weekend of the 2016 World League where Zwerver was unavailable because of a personal situation. Now Gewehr takes the roll full-time.
“Gido (Vermulen) and I have worked closely over the years at Papendal and that is excellent,” Gewehr explains. “We connected quickly in our way of working. It was a big wish of mine to work with the senior team. I am very motivated to contribute to the development of Orange. ”
“I am delighted that Claudio is joining the staff of the men’s team,” said coach Gido Vermeulen. “Claudio is a senior coach with lots of experience and knows what steps need to be put in place. It is ideal that he an assistant of the national team and in the winter can continue with the talents at Papendal. His coming to Orange is good for Dutch volleyball. ”
