OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Calvin Mende – Penn State – 6-11 – Opp – RS-Freshman – Redlands, Calif.
RS-Freshman Calvin Mende has been selected as the EIVA Offensive Player of the Week as he averaged 4.83 kills/set and hit .457 in a 2-0 week for Penn State to capture the EIVA Regular Season Championship. Mende played in two sets in the Nittany Lions’ 3-0 win over Charleston (W. Va.) on Friday as he recorded five kills. In the regular season finale, Calvin would finish with a match-high 24 kills and hit .543. Mende is currently 4th in the EIVA in hitting percentage (.305), and 6th in kills (292) and kills/set (3.28). This is Calvin’s second EIVA Offensive Player of the Week selection in 2017.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Taylor Bloomquist – Sacred Heart – 6-8 – RS – Sophomore – Carlsbad, Calif.
Sophomore Taylor Bloomquist has been selected as the EIVA Defensive Player of the Week after recording 14 total blocks in a 2-0 week to help Sacred Heart into their first EIVA Championship Tournament for the first time since 2010. Bloomquist recorded six total blocks in a 3-1 victory over NJIT on Friday and then followed with eight total blocks in a sweep over Princeton on Saturday. Taylor ended the regular season 1st in the EIVA in blocks/set (1.20), 2nd in total blocks (101) and block assists (83), while ranking 4th in solo blocks (18). Bloomquist’s block/set average is 5th-best in the nation as this is Taylor’s second EIVA Defensive Player of the Week selection in 2017.
