Annerys Vargas Named Dominican Republic’s Player of the Year

Middle blocker Annerys Vargas has been named the 2017 Dominican Player of the Year. The 6’5″ 36-year old who has been a part of the Dominican national team for a whopping 20 years was honored in a ceremony on July 6th in Santo Domingo.

Among her achievements in 2017 were an award as Best Blocker for the NORCECA Group A qualifier to the 2018 FIVB World Championships, and she ranked 2nd among all players in Group 1 at the 2017 FIVB World Grand Prix with 1.03 blocks/set.

She again led the Dominicans with 19 blocks (.35/set) at this year’s Grand Prix, which was matched by outside-hitter teammate Brayelin Martinez. The pair, standing 6’5″ and and 6’7″ tall, respectively, make up one of the biggest front lines in women’s international volleyball.

After a long career playing internationally both in Europe and in the Americas, Vargas returned home last season and played with Caribenas Volleyball Club, located in Porto Principe. The club won the 2018 Dominican title and Vargas was named the league’s Blocker of the season.
