The next two tournaments on the 2017 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour are set to be hosted in Australia. The first is the Shepparton one-star event in the state of Victoria that runs from March 4-5, followed by a women-only Sydney two-star event from March 17-19.
The return to Australia brings up memories from the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, which led the way for iconic venues by taking place on Bondi Beach. At the 2000 Olympics, Australia’s Kerri Pottharst and Natalie Cook won gold on the women’s side while USA’s Dain Blanton and Eric Fonoimoana took the men’s gold.
The two tournament will also show Australian fans what is to come with the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games when beach volleyball makes its Games debut.
The tournament at Shepparton will consist of two temporary purpose-built courts, a warm-up court and a 600-seat grandstand at Victoria Park lake precinct, while Sydney will take place at the famous Manley beach.
“Beach volleyball events in Australia are famous for their party atmosphere and we can guarantee fans are going to love what they see,” says Events Manager for Volleyball Australia Baz Wedmaier.
