The qualification round of the FIVB World Tour event in The Hague has concluded with eight teams from each gender moving onto the main draw. The Hague is a three-star event, meaning that the prize money awarded to the first place finishers will be $10,000 out of a $150,000 purse prize.
The semifinal and final matches will stream live on the FIVB’s YouTube page, which will begin on June 17 with the semifinals and the finals on June 18.
Women’s Results
Pair’s from eight countries advance onward to the money round of the tournament on the women’s side, following the qualification round. Women’s pairs from Australia, Germany, Kazakhstan, Norway Poland, Spain, the Slovak Republic and the United States moved on.
On Tuesday, Brazil’s Maria Antonelli and Carolina Salgado won two country quota matches to give them the top seed in the qualification tournament and were scheduled to play 16th seeded Alexandra Moiseeva and Ekaterina Syrtseva of Russia for a spot in the main draw. An injury for Syrtseva forced the pair to forfeit the match and gave them the easy win to advance to the main draw of the tournament.
Belgium’s Katrien Gielen and Liesbeth Mouha won two matches in their route to the main draw. The pair first took down the 11th seeded Inna Makhno/Iryna Makhno of the Ukraine 2-0, (21-15, 21-12) the 6th seeded Stefanie Schwaiger/Teresa Strauss of Austria 2-0, (21-10, 21-17). The have played in 23 FIVB World Tour events together, but this is only their second on the year. The last time the two competed together was in 2012 with a fourth place finish at the Gstaad Grand Slam, ranking #13 in the World Tour circuit at the time.
Emily Day and Brittany Hochevar of the United States were able to secure their spot in the main draw with a win over French pair Ophelie Lusson and Alexandra Jupiter 2-0, (21-14, 21-19).
Men’s Results
After being seeded 16th in the qualification tournament, Ondrej Perusic and David Schweiner of the Czech Republic posted a 2-0, (21-16, 21-15) win over top-seeded Daniel Bergerud/Christian Sorum of Norway. This has been an ongoing trend for the pair, as they have a 6-1 record in the preliminary rounds of the World Tour tournaments, with five of those victories coming to teams ranked ahead of them.
Trevor Crabb and Sean Rosenthal of the United States also posted set of wins in the qualification round to move on to the main draw. The pair first took down Switzerland’s Mirco Gerson and Michiel Zandbergen 2-0, (21-14, 21-15) then Iaroslav Gordieiev and Mykola Babich of the Ukraine 2-0, (21-12, 21-19).
