The Big Ten had the upper hand in a pair of season-opening sweeps over ACC foes, with Minnesota relying on its serve and Wisconsin putting up eye-popping offensive numbers.

Florida State at Minnesota

Second-ranked Minnesota registered a sweep of Florida State to earn a season-opening victory in Big Ten/ACC Challenge action Friday.

Sophomore Stephanie Samedy (14) and sophomore Jasmyn Martin (11) paced the Golden Gopher offense with double-digit kill numbers, while redshirt junior Taylor Morgan tallied eight kills. Senior Samantha Seliger-Swenson distributed a team-high 35 assists, registered a team-high 13 digs, along with freshman CC McGraw, and served up an impressive five aces.

Leading the Seminoles were redshirt senior Christina Ambrose (12 kills), senior Brianne Burkert (22 assists) and senior Kelsey Wicinski (16 digs).

The Gophers were on their serving game with eight aces, while allowing none and also bested FSU in kills (45-42), blocks (8-6) and digs (56-55).

Minnesota led by as many as 11 (17-6) in Set 3 before FSU sliced the margin to four at 23-19, including kills by five different players and three stuffs. The Gophers utilized both of their timeouts during the stretch and a Martin kill put them on the hill at 24-19. Kills by Payton Caffey and Ashley Murray kept the Seminoles in the game, before Martin closed the door at 25-21.

 

North Carolina vs. Wisconsin

Fourth-ranked Wisconsin hit a blistering .611 clip to dominate the first set and never faltered from there, sweeping North Carolina in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Friday.

For the match, the Badgers hit a dominant .420 with just six errors and held the Tar Heels to a dismal .067 hitting percentage and forced 22 hitting errors. UW also boasted a 40-28 advantaged in putaways.

Sophomore Dana Rettke led Wisconsin’s balanced offensive attack with 10 kills, while Sydney Hilley registered the 10th double-double of her career with 27 assists and a team-best 10 digs.

Freshman Destiny Cox led the Tar Heels in her collegiate debut with 13 kills. Redshirt sophomore Hunter Atherton logged a team-high 25 assists, while junior Mia Fradenburg tallied 12 digs to lead UNC.

Wisconsin jumped ahead 16-4 in Set 1 and cruised to victory. Set 2 saw the team use a 7-1 mid-set run to pull away 18-13 and on to the win. In the final stanza, it was a 14-5 opening run that set the table for victory.
