Once again, Brazilian squads swept the finals of an FIVB World Beach Tour event this season. The four-star tournament was a $300,000 payout event that added 800 points to the top finishers with a $20,000 prize winning.
As compared to other events, the event in Rio has a high payout rate – not as high as the first FIVB World Tour event, which was the five-star Fort Lauderdale event that handed out $40,000 to the top finishers on both the men’s and women’s side of the event and 1,200 points.
Top-finisher payouts per star rated event
- One Star – $2,000/200 points
- Two-Star – $6,000/400 points
- Three-Star – $8,000/600 points
- Four-Star – $20,000/800 points
- Five-Star – $40,000/1,200 points
In essence, the higher the star of the event, the more meaning or position it has on your earnings and point scale for overall rankings.
Men’s Finish
On the men’s side, the dominant pairing of Alison Cerutti and Bruno Schmidt came out on top over Poland’s Piotr Kantor and Bartosz Losiak for their 12th career World Tour gold medal as a pair. With the win, Cerutti/Schmidt earned the top prize of $20,000, while Kantor/Losiak ended their run in Rio with a $16,000 payday.
The American duo of Theo Brunner and Casey Patterson were downed by Italy’s Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo in a tough three-set match. With the loss, the American pair finished fourth in the tournament, taking home $8,000 and adding 400 points to their overall total – also being the top American finishers on the men’s side of the competition.

Agatha/Duda will share the $20,000 top prize while Canada’s Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes take the $16,000-second place winnings.
In their first tournament as a professional beach pair, American’s Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes finished in eighth place, earning 320 points and a total of $6,000. They were the highest finishing American duo on the women’s side of the tournament.
