Flamengo is the most supported soccer club in Brazil, with a fanbase of over 30 million supporters. It also has a deep volleyball history in its past, winning the Female Superliga in 2001, and having a lot of its players called up for Brazil’s NT Olympic rosters. The team went on a hiatus in the mid-200’s though, only to return in 2018 to participate in Brazil’s lower tier leagues, aiming at a Superliga promotion (Globo.com):
“I told the girls: the good news is that you are coming to the biggest sports club in Brazil, with the biggest crowd in the world. The bad news, and the reality, is that Flamengo is always expected to win. We never enter championships to be second, or third place. We have an obligation to win. That gives a lot of strength to us. And this group was handpicked.” – Flamengo’s vice president of Olympic sports Alexandre Póvoa
Coach Alexandre Dantas, who is also a manager of Brazil’s men’s Youth national teams, is confident the team is ready to give its best:
“The group has already started working hard, but we have the humility to know that good results do not just depend on people. However, nothing prevents us to give our best at this moment. Although our goal is daring, we can not fail to give the maximum of our efforts. I was very careful in the assembly of the team. It is very competitive and within the reality of the club. There is a mix between more experienced and young athletes. There is room for young athletes from our youth categories who have the dream of becoming professionals.”
