BYU Men Advance To Semifinals With Sweep Over Barton

In the first match of the 2017 NCAA Men’s Volleyball Tournament, #3 seeded BYU took down #6 seed Barton in three sets.

The first set started at a back and forth battle between the teams, with the score tied at 8-8. BYU slowly began to build their lead after a kill by Jake Langlois, a Barton attack error, and strong BYU triple block giving the Cougars an 11-8 lead. The Cougars forged ahead with strong attacks from Langlois and Tim Dobbert.

There were four big blocks in the first set and Dobbert leading the pack with five kills. The end of the first set came from a BYU service ace to take the set 25-19.

That was the closest Barton came the entire match to BYU.

The second set came to a quick 11-3 lead for BYU, a lead they would not give up in the match. A string of kills from BYU and attack errors from Barton left the score at 21-8. At this point, star Ben Patch made his first appearance in the match, posting four kills in the second set. The Cougars finished with a dominate 25-10 second set victory with BYU going up 2-0 in the match.

In the second, BYU posted 10 kills on 13 attempts with one error for a .692 hitting clip. Barton was held to a .000 hitting percentage in the second.

The third set started close again with the score tied up at 4-4, but two blocks and a service ace took BYU ahead 7-4. Barton brought the match back into contention, tying the set at 10-10 with two kills from both Angelos Mandilaris and Vasilis Mandilaris. A seven-point run for BYU put them ahead 23-14 late in the set. Another two triple blocks from the Cougars ended the set and match at 25-15.

BYU dominated Barton in aces and blocks for the match, with 10-2 aces and 33.0-4.0 in blocks.

Brenden Sander led the match for BYU with 11 kills on a .409 hitting percentage, four digs, and eight blocks. Langlois added another seven kills, five digs, and four blocks while Dobbert crushed six kills, five digs, and two blocks.

For Barton, Mandilaris put down eight kills and four digs while Aleksa Brkovic recorded eight more and seven digs.

The Cougars will face #2 seeded Long Beach State in the semifinals on Thursday, May 4 at 6 PM ET.
