After Diego Mosna, president of the Italian Serie A team Trentino Volley, threatened to pull out of the CEV Continental Cup due to unorganized scheduling, the Confederation of European Volleyball has changed the dates of the tournament – the second-tier continental tournament behind the Champions League. Originally planned between late April and early May, the CEV Continental Cup finals will now take place on May 12th and 13th. Any earlier would interfere with League championships, while any later would interfere with international events, such as the NORCECA Continental Championships and World Grand Champions Cup.
In order to keep teams in the league, CEV President Aleksander Boricic needed to respond to the threat, especially after the president of Azimut Modena, a strong Italian team, decided to pull out of next year’s CEV cup. As a result, the CEV has already planned the Final Four of the Champions League for the next two seasons. They will take place in mid-May.
The Italian volleyball league and European Championships will now be able to plan ahead for their seasons with the set schedule.
The intention of the threat to pull out of the cup was to initiate a change in the scheduling of the CEV European Champions League. Paola De Micheli, president of Volleyball League Series A, and Mosna were satisfied with CEV and FIVB once they found a solution. “We thank the CEV, which we know has been working on a common table with the FIVB to a solution which saw the Italian sport policy activities,” De Micheli said. “On July 20th in Bologna we will present a calendar that rewards our efforts and those of the Club.”
