The first match of the Italian men’s SuperLeague has concluded with Cucine Lube Civitanova and Diatec Trentino going up 1-0 in the best three of five series.

Cucine Lube Civitanova def. Azimut Modena

The first victors of the semis was Cucine Lube Civitanova in a challenging five set match 3-2, (25-22, 22-25, 20-25, 25-19, 15-11) over Azimut Modena. Modena will look to come back strong in the second match between the two, as they are the reigning champions looking to regain their title.

Civitanova took the early 1-0 match lead, taking the first set, but Modena was looking to win, going up on Civitanova 2-1 after claiming the next two sets of the match. Modena couldn’t hold onto their momentum, dropping the fourth set to send the match into a fifth and deciding set, where Civitanova was able to take control and win the match with a fifth set score of 15-11.

Civitanova was led by Sokolov who contributed 17 points in the match, followed by Juantorena with 12 and Candellaro with 11.

Putting down a match-best in points was Ngapeth E. for Modena with 31, followed by Holt and Vettori who each had 12.

Diatec Trentino def. Sir Safety Perugia Conad

Diatec Trentino went up 1-0 over Sir Safety Perugia Conad in a four set match up 3-1, (16-25, 25-22, 26-24, 25-22), making a comeback win after dropping the first set.

Perugia was able to dominate in the first set 25-16, but Trentino did not let that rattle them into quitting during the match, as they were able to take the next three sets to grab the four set victory.

Trentino was led by Lanza who put down 15 points in the match, while Van De Voorde added another 13.

For Perugia, Atanasijevic led the team with 13 points in the match.

“The team was great, they played a great game, staying focused in the bad moments of the game, stepping up and do what they are able to do,” said Angelo Lorenzetti of Trentino.

Up Next:

On March 25, Trentino will look to go up 2-0 on Sir Safety in a rematch from last weekend, while Civitanova tries to do the same over reigning champions Modena on March 26.

The third round of the semifinals will take place on April 9, followed by the fourth (if needed) on April 19 and the fifth on April 22 (if needed).
