Not even one week after competing in the USAV Collegiate Beach Championships, USC’s recent graduate’s Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes will head to Rio de Janiero to begin their professional beach career from May 17-21 on the FIVB World Tour.
The event in Rio is a four-star event, meaning that the prize money and points awarded to the winners are greater than at a smaller sized tournament. The tournament will be the first where the pair will be able to accept any monetary winnings, as it is against NCAA rules to accept prize money for such an event as an amateur.
Directly following the event in Rio, the duo will head around the world to Moscow to compete in a three-star event from May 31 to June 4.
At USC, the pair ended their senior season with a 53-1 overall record while helping lead the Trojans to their second consecutive NCAA title with a 38-1 dual record. The duo also won the USAV Collegiate Beach Championships, earning themselves a spot on the USAV collegiate beach national team.
Claes and Hughes have been playing non-stop for the past two months, finishing up their collegiate career, but are looking forward to the FIVB World Tour.
