FIVB World Beach Tour Resumes In Rio, With Olympic Champions Competing

2017 FIVB World Beach Tour – Rio de Janiero

The top beach athletes of the world will be returning to Rio de Janiero after last year’s Olympic Games, while some make their debut to the Brazilian beach. This is the third straight season and 18th times since the induction of the competition in 1987 at Olympic Park. The event in Barra da Tijuca hosts a $300,000 four-star event.

Rio opens up play on May 17 with a qualification tournament, where eight teams from each gender will compete to make it into the main draw. Friday and Saturday’s play will highlight the first of the elimination rounds, followed by the medal matches on Sunday.

There are a number of big names coming into the tournament on both the men’s and women’s side of the draw.

Teams

Olympic champions Alison Cerutti and Bruno Schmidt of Brazil will hold a home court advantage, once again, on their route to another victory. To two defeated Italy’s, Daniele Lupo and Paolo Nicolai who will also highlight the competition on the men’s side.

On the women’s side of the tournament, Olympic champions Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst of Germany will step back onto the sand where they won Olympic gold. Winners of the Fort Lauderdale event that kicked off the 2017 season, Talita Antunes and Larissa Franca will return to the sand in their home country. Making their way onto the sand of the first time in their professional beach volleyball careers, are recent college graduates and beach standouts, Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes of the USA. Claes and Hughes enter the main draw of the tournament with 1620 points in the World Tour to their names.

The qualification round will begin on May 17, with a total of 16 teams on both sides competing to enter the main draw – eight teams will advance on both the men’s and women’s side.

The main draw’s final roster will be set following the conclusion of the qualification round – beginning on May 18.

The teams are competing for a share of the $300,000 purse, the breakdown of the points and earnings are:
