Class of 2018 defensive specialist/libero Emily Van Slate is staying in state with her collegiate decision as she will head to Baylor. Van Slate will make the trek from Houston to Waco for her freshman year come the fall season.

Originally from Houston, Texas, Van Slate is a senior at Cypress Ridge High School. She was a four-time All-District pick and the 2017 Attacker of the Year for her classification.

On the club side, Van Slate played with the Texas Tornadoes and 17 Mizuno where she added to her list of awards and recruiting prominence.

“Emily Van Slate is an athlete that captures the entire sprit of what it means to be a Baylor Bear,” Baylor head coach Ryan McGuyre said in the team’s release of the signing. “She is a fierce and competitive warrior. Though undersized at outside hitter by some people’s standards, she finds a way to win and outwork her opponents. Her relentless style of defense is as never-ending as her desire to selflessly serve those around her.”

Baylor is coming off of one of its best seasons in program history, making the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year after they earned the #12 seed and hosted in the first two rounds. Their 2018 spring roster features three defensive specialists/liberos as Van Slate will add to it in the fall to help the Bears overcome the loss of libero Jana Brusek.
