Class of 2019 middle blocker Nathaniel Gates has committed to the Stanford University men’s volleyball program. Standing at 6’8″, Gates would be in store for his freshman season in the winter of 2020.
After being chosen as one of five middle blockers to the U.S. Boys’ Youth National Training Team, Gates made the cut for the official team as one of three middles. Gates also started every match for Team USA, including when they played for Gold against Cuba, and had seven kills against Puerto Rico as well as six kills (second on the team) and three blocks (first on the team) against Nicaragua.
A senior in high school now, Gates attends La Jolla High School in California where he is set for his fourth year of varsity come the season. He also plays with Coast Volleyball. So far for his career, according to his MaxPreps profile, he has notched 518 kills (2.0 per set) on a .402 hitting percentage, 214 blocks (0.8 per set), 199 digs (0.8 per set) and 44 aces (0.2 per set). The team also went 34-7 en route to a CIF SoCal Boys Volleyball Division I Championships appearance.
Gates also joins Kevin Lamp, a setter and outside hitter, as commits for the Cardinal in the class of 2019. He’s the not the first one of his siblings to go Division I for volleyball either, as his older sister Madeleine Gates is currently a sophomore at UCLA averaging 2.38 kills per set and 1.19 blocks per set.
The Stanford men’s team went 6-20 in 2018 and 3-9 as a member of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. They’re also ranked 14th in the Way-Too-Early VolleyMob Men’s Top 20 Power Rankings for 2019.
