Liu Jo Nordmeccanica Modena has made another signing to its 2017-2018 roster – this time with a Colombian National Team member in Madelaynee Montaño. The 185 cm (6’0″) opposite is 34-years old and had a 38% positive attack rate last season with Chemik Police.
Montaño was born in Colombia but moved to Argentina with her junior volleyball career. She later attended Miami Dade College where she won the NJCAA National Championship in 2002 and was named the AVCA Two-year Colleges National Player of the Year. After the 2003 season with Miami Dade, she signed onto the Greek A1 League for the 2004-2005 season with Aris Thessaloniki where she stayed until 2006. After a sabbatical for maternity leave, she played with Iraklis Thessaloniki in 2008-2009 which led to a span with KT&G Daejeon in South Korea from 2009-2012. Since that point, she’s been on four clubs in five years – with this year being five in six years. During that span, she played for Rabita Baku (2012-2013), Galatasaray Daikin (2013-2014), Fenerbahce Istanbul (2014-2015) and Chemik Police (2015-2017).
In the totality of her pro club career, Montaño has won championships in Korea (2), Poland (2), Turkey and Azerbaijani. She has also been named MVP of the Korean championships and was given best scorer of the 2012-2013 CEV Champions League. She also has been with the Colombian National Team since 2011.
Modena finished second in 2016-2017 after coming in third in 2015-2016 of the Italian Serie A1. Montaño now joins the club off her final season with Chemik Police in the Polish League when they finished first in the regular season and won the four-team postseason tournament to be crowned as Orlen Liga champions. After Modena came so close to an Italian Serie A1 championship for two straight years, they’ll look for Montaño to push them over the edge as she did with Chemik Police.
