While the medals for the 2017 U21 Pan American Cup are still up for grabs (Cuba against Brazil for gold, Canada against Guatemala for bronze), the two spots for the U21 World Championships have been decided.
The top-finishing South American and NORCECA federation squads in this tournament would earned second spots from their respective confederations to the U21 World Championships.
Brazil confirmed their spot early when they were the only South American squad to advance from pool play in the tournament. They were one of only two entered in the tournament, alongside Chile, who went 0-2 in pool play.
The NORCECA spot, meanwhile, was in doubt all the way until Saturday’s semi-finals. When Brazil beat Guatemala and Cuba beat Canada to advance to the championship, though, that left Cuba as the only NORCECA team remaining, and the two spots were set.
They will join their counterparts the United States and Argentina, who qualified in 2016 via titles in their respective continental championships. Also going from the region will be Canada, who will likely qualify, pending FIVB confirmation, as one of the 6 highest-ranked teams on January 2017 who did not otherwise qualify. Canada’s U21 men ranked 8th in the world as of the January 2017 rankings.
The Pan American Cup was the last qualifier for the 2017 U21 Men’s World Championships, which means that, pending FIVB’s confirmation of the 6 World Ranking spots, the full 16-team field is set.
The tournament will take place from June 23rd-July 2nd in the Czech cities of Brno and Ceske Budejovice.
