Delaware players, from over the years, recount their experience with the volleyball program, mainly the coaches Bonnie Kenny and Cindy Gregory. The accounts from the former players are that of fear and anxiety over the mental games that were played in their time with the University.
Kenny and Gregory were fired on October 16, 2016, following a week-long suspension mid-season and an investigation with the NCAA.
In the 14 years that Kenny and Gregory were with Delaware, they had 34 players leave the program for reasons other than graduation. Prior to coming to Delaware to coach, Kenny and Gregory had coached together at the University of Massachusetts from 1995 to 2001.
Some of the players recounted having Wednesday meeting with Kenny and Gregory, to which they said, ‘you were likely to come out crying’ after the meeting. The meeting stopped in 2014 as a result of an NCAA investigation. Some of the former players said they used “psychological warfare” and were manipulative with the way they [the coaches] talked to them.
Since the duo was fired back in October, they have not been heard from, with their phone numbers out of service. All inquiries sent to the two were not returned.
