Most of the time in sports, players are interviewed just by reporters following a match or in a planned interview setting away from the game. You rarely see players take the time to be interviewed by their fans, but the Netherlands took this opportunity during the 2017 CEV European Women’s Championships.
On the docket for the two fans is Laura Dijkema – who shared the busy schedule that is demanded of the team in order to prepare for big matches late in the competition. In the team’s spare time they often just go out for coffee as a team or relax and watch movies when they do have a few hours to spare.
On the road traveling, Dijkema brought some peanut butter with her to remind her of home and to give her a familiar meal throughout the day.
Dijkema is the Dutch team’s setter and told the fans that she likes to feel out a play and makes the call for certain plays to be run throughout a rally. This is unusual because a lot of the time many setters will set up a play prior to the serve so that everyone is on the same page but Dijkema offers up a quick change and the element of surprise.
At the European Championships, the Dutch squad finished with the silver medal behind Serbia.
