Samantha Dunn and Sydney Hall have declared their intent to attend East Carolina University and compete for the volleyball program beginning in the fall of 2017, according to an announcement Wednesday by head coach Julie Torbett.

Dunn is a local product from Greenville who played at D.H. Conley High School. She helped the Vikings compile a 25-1 overall record and a 12-0 mark in league play as well as reach the state semifinals in 2016. Dunn tallied 10 kills in the regional final match and was named to the Eastern Carolina All-Conference Team. She will serve as a defensive specialist for the Pirates.

“We are really pleased we were able to offer Sam a spot on the team,” Torbett said. “She is a local player that has always wanted to play for East Carolina and grew up coming to the matches. She has worked really hard to make that dream a reality and will share that passion with the rest of the players on the team. Sam is also an excellent student. She has been a standout in the classroom and on the court at D.H. Conley. She will compete for time in the backcourt next season.”

Hall played three seasons of varsity volleyball as an outside hitter and right side for head coach Keegan Felix at Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance, Calif. During the recently completed 2016 season, as a captain, Hall helped lead the Knights to a 25-13 overall record and a spot in the California Division 3 state quarterfinals. She also earned second-team all-area honors as a senior.

Hall was named the SoCal Prep Legends Girls Athlete of the Week Sept. 2 after notching 11 kills, six digs and a block to lead Bishop Montgomery to a 20-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-20, 15-10 thrilling victory in its season opener. She then paced the Knights to a pair of 2-0 sweeps over both Ayala and Tustin in the Tustin Tournament.

“Sydney is a strong player that will add much needed depth to the middle hitter position,” Torbett stated. “She has a lot of room for growth in her game and will be a tremendous player for us. Her size and athleticism drew us to her as did her experience playing in a strong volleyball area in California.”
