Former Utah outside hitter/defensive specialist/libero Torre Glasker is headed to UC Santa Barbara as a transfer for 2018. According to the UCSB press release, Glasker is set to make the switch in time for the spring quarter and would then be an immediately eligible junior in the fall of 2018.
A 5’10” native of South Jordan, Utah, Glasker spent her last two years playing for the Utes after a prolific high school career at Bingham High School. In her first season with Utah, Glasker notched 105 digs (1.57 per set), 38 kills (0.57 per set) on a .130 mark, nine blocks and six aces in 2016. Last year, she totaled 56 digs (1.10 per set) as she was only used in a defensive role.
That will be different with UCSB, who per the release will be used exclusively as a pin hitter, which would be a potential reason that she is changing schools.
“We are very excited to add a player of Torre’s caliber to our program,” UCSB head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch said about the news. “She is a dynamic athlete and has all the skills to play six rotations on a pin. She can play fast and score as an attacker, she is a solid passer, and she has incredible range as a defender. She is a perfect fit for our team – both in terms of being a great person and student, and with what she brings to the court – and another six-rotation pin player is a big immediate need. She has great experiences to draw from as well, bringing two years in the Pac-12 with her. We are thrilled she is able to be a part of our spring training to be fully acclimated by the fall.”
The Gauchos finished 2017 with an 8-20 record and a 7-8 mark in the Big West. Their 2017 roster featured three outside hitters, including one senior to graduate prior to 2018. That journey toward the fall of 2018 starts on April 7 in some spring matches that include USC, UC Irvine and UCLA.
From new to old, Utah – fresh off of a 24-10 season in which they made the Sweet 16 – already goes through some big losses, as Glasker adds another to the tab. She was more of a back row defender for the Utes, but joins two other outside hitters departing.
