George Mason is bringing on the service of a pair of transfers on the women’s side in Pihla Jarvenpaa and Licie Leite. Jarvenpaa will be a junior in the 2017 season and have two years left of play while Leite will be a sophomore with three years left of play. Both are slated to be immediately eligible after coming in from the junior college ranks.
Jarvenpaa arrives as a 6’0″ middle blocker out of Palm Beach State College in Florida. She was a two-year letterwinner and was named to the all-conference second-team as a sophomore when she hit over .300 with 1.88 kills and 0.82 blocks per set. Originally from Finland, she was part of the Finish Junior National Team in her homeland.
Also from a foreign country, Leite is originally from Brazil. A 5’11” outside hitter, Leite left her birth country to attend College of Central Florida for one season last year. In 30 matches of action, she averaged 1.17 kills, 1.39 digs, 0.32 blocks and 0.18 aces per set.
Both players will be competing for playing time. There are four other middle blockers on the roster to contend with Jarvenpaa while Leite also has four athletes to compete with for action at the outside hitter position. Regardless they will look to make an impact for a George Mason team that finished 7-20 in the 2016 season as they went 3-11 in conference play. They will look for the international pair to bring on experience and talent to a young team as they go for their first winning season since 2010 under the regime of a new head coach.
