After finishing the nonconference portion of its schedule with an even .500 record, the Georgetown University volleyball team opens BIG EAST play this weekend on the road. The Hoyas travel to face No. 15 Creighton on Friday before returning to the East Coast on Sunday to take on Providence.
Live stats will be available for both games at www.GUHoyas.comalong with a video stream for Friday’s match against the Bluejays at 8 p.m. EST. Sunday’s contest against the Friars, set for a 1 p.m. first serve, will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network with Chris Fama calling the action.
Georgetown is coming off a hard-fought 0-3 showing at the Rice adidas Invitational II to wrap up nonconference play last weekend. Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 3.17 kills while hitting at a .337 clip.
Speech continues to lead the Blue & Gray with 3.54 kills per set while hitting a BIG EAST leading .438 on the season. Alyssa Sinnette (Pearland, Texas/Dawson) adds 2.42 kps, Aima Eichie (Castle Rock, Colo./Rock Canyon/UC Davis) chips in 1.82 kps at a .341 clip and both Olivia King (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) and Riley Wertzberger (Dallas, Texas/Richardson) chime in with 1.70 kills a frame. Paige McKnight (Atlanta, Ga./Dunwoody) paces the offense with 9.17 assists per set.
Defensively, Kenzie Higareda (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) is fourth in the league with 4.21 digs per set while McKnight adds 2.52 dps. At the net, Speech is averaging just shy of a block a frame with 40 total rejections in 12 matches.
Creighton (7-4) dropped to No. 15 in the most recent AVCA poll following a pair of losses at the Shocker Volleyball Classic in Wichita, Kan. Lydia Dimke, the preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year, paces the Bluejay offense with 10.45 assists per set to go with 2.48 digs, 1.33 kills and 0.76 blocks per set. Jaali Winters leads the offense with 3.16 kills per set while Taryn Kloth, Marysa Wilkinson and Megan Ballenger all average more than two kills a frame. Defensively, four players haul in at least two digs a set, led by Brittany Witt with 3.79 dps.
Providence (11-3) has lost three-straight matches following an 11-0 start to the season. Five Friars average at least two kills per set, led by Addison Root with 3.51 kps. McKenzie Lydon anchors the back row with 3.71 digs per set while Allison Barber adds 3.02 a stanza.
Georgetown is 27-14 all-time against the Friars, including season sweeps the past two years. The Hoyas have won 14 of the past 15 matches against PC dating back to 1995.
Following the weekend road trek, the Hoyas return to the friendly confines of McDonough Arena for their BIG EAST home opening weekend against Butler and Xavier on September 29 and 30, respectively.
