Georgetown has announced Toby Rens as their new head coach. He will begin his official coaching duties with the team on January 15 and replaces Arlisa Williams – who resigned after 12 seasons with the team.
Rens has been coaching in the NCAA for 19 seasons now as a head coach where he has reached six NCAA Tournaments. Overall, Ren has averaged nearly 20 wins in each of his seasons of coaching with a total of 378 career wins. Rens has had coaching stints at Northern Michigan, Maryland Eastern Shore, LIU-Brooklyn, Pittsburgh and Chicago State.
Most recently, Rens was the head coach at Division I Maryland Eastern Shore for the past four seasons, which was his second stint with the team. In his time with UMES, he was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2002 and 2017. He also garnered a similar award while at LIU-Brooklyn as he took home the Northeast Conference Coach of the Year in 2005.
This past season, UMES posted a 27-9 overall record including a 12-0 mark in the MEAC. This was enough to give them some post-season play in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship where they ended their season in the first round against West Virginia.
In addition to his head coaching jobs, Rens has spent time with Morningside College (his alma mater), Tennessee Tech, Texas Tech and George Washington.
This past season, Georgetown went 8-22 and posting a 2-16 mark in Big East play.
“My predecessor was extremely professional and she built a good foundation while bringing in some very talented student-athletes,” Rens said to Georgetown Athletics. “I’m extremely excited to start working with the talent that we already have in the gym while recruiting future Hoyas. The Washington, D.C., Metro area also has some of the very best high school and club volleyball talent in the country. I am going to recruit the most talented student-athletes in the nation while trying to keep more local talent at home playing in front of family and friends.”
