The Georgia Tech volleyball team handed Georgia their first loss of the season in straight sets.
Though, Georgia was swept the final score did not reflect the hard-fought battle on the court, as each sets score were close 25-22, 26-24 and 29-27.
Georgia Tech’s Teegan Van Gunst recorded her 1,000th career dig during the match, after picking up 13, making her one of eight Yellow Jackets to reach 1,000 career digs and kills. The Yellow Jackets posted 11 blocks for the match and had a .227 hitting percentage.
Georgia’s Cassidy Anderson picked up a match high 15 digs to accompany two aces, which puts her at 18 aces on the season. Bulldog’s Meghan Donovan posted her second double-double for the season with 30 assists and 14 digs.

THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech volleyball team (7-2) swept Georgia (8-1) to hand the Bulldogs their first loss of the season on Friday night in front of a packed and enthusiastic crowd at O’Keefe Gymnasium.
The Yellow Jackets won the Georgia Challenge winning all three matches. Senior Teegan Van Gunst was named the tournament MVP, while freshman Kodie Comby and junior Gabriela Stavnetchei were named to the all-tournament team.
Teegan Van Gunst tallied her 1,000th career dig in the match, making her just one of eight Yellow Jackets all time to eclipse 1,000 career digs and kills.
How It Happened
Up 4-3 in game one, the Jackets extended that to 8-3 behind the aggressive serving of London Ackermann who had two aces in that span. The Bulldogs closed the gap late in the game to one point 21-20, spurring a Georgia Tech timeout. The Jackets regrouped and closed out the set with a 25-22 win.
The tide turned in set two with Georgia taking an 11-7 lead. Tech recovered from the deficit to tie the set 21-21. The next four points for the Jackets came from Kodie Comby and Gabriela Stavnetchei for set point 24-21, but Georgia fought back to tie it again 24-24. Georgia committed back-to-back errors and the Yellow Jackets took the set 26-24.
Set three was a back and forth battle. Down 14-13, Tech scored four straight points thanks to solid blocking at the net to take a 17-14 lead. Georgia fought back to a 21-20 lead, but three straight kills from Teegan Van Gunst put Tech ahead 22-21. The teams battled for match point, but the Yellow Jackets put it away on a kill by Teegan Van Gunst 29-27.

“It was a great atmosphere tonight,” head coach Michelle Collier said. “Both teams played really hard and fought for every point. It was really great volleyball all around.
“It means a lot to the seniors to beat Georgia. Teegan has been our backbone and the player we go to in tough situations. She showed up big tonight. She’s playing aggressive on both sides of the court and it’s rare to see a player’s that can do that to the level that she does.”

ATLANTA — A down-to-the-wire battle, the Georgia volleyball team (8-1) took its first loss of the season after falling 3-0 at Georgia Tech (7-2) on Friday night.
The final score wasn’t indicative of the battle on the court, as set scores stood at 25-22, 26-24 and 29-27. The Yellow Jackets took a slight edge on offense with a .227 hitting mark and 11 team blocks.
Cassidy Anderson and Meghan Donovan each earned a spot on the Georgia Challenge All-Tournament Team. In the match against GT, Anderson put up a game-high 15 digs to go with two aces, as she now has 18 aces on the season. Donovan tabbed the second double-double of her early career with 30 assists and 14 digs.
The duo had help from all around the court, including Maddie Lobenstein and Kendall Kazor collecting 12 kills apiece and Caroline Ostman’s 10 digs. Desiree McCray led the charge at the net with three blocks while three other Bulldogs tallied at least two blocks in the match.
All three sets had the teams toe-to-toe late in the games. A kill from Lobenstein in set one had the Bulldogs within one at 21-20 before GT got on a run after a timeout. In the second set, Georgia held the advantage until the teams traded points. Kazor had six kills in the frame, including one to tie it at 24 each, but GT would capitalize on Georgia errors for the 2-0 lead.
The final set had the teams going back and forth before a McCray kill and Anderson ace helped Georgia go up 21-19. GT regained ground after a timeout as the teams traded points with a Kazor kill knotting it at 27. The home team took the final points to seal the win.
Georgia returns to the Ramsey Center next week for the final week of non-conference action. The Bulldogs take on Florida A&M on Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET before hosting the Bulldog Invitational beginning on Friday. Bethune Cookman, McNeese State and South Alabama make up the field while all of Georgia’s games will be featured on SEC Network+/WatchESPN.
