Harvard Hits For .403 To Defeat EIVA Foe NJIT In Straight Sets

The Harvard men’s volleyball team downed NJIT in three sets on Saturday afternoon at the Malkin Athletic Center. The win came with set scores of 25-20, 25-23 and 25-18.

Erik Johnsson led the Crimson (5-6, 3-3 EIVA) with 11 kills, with support from Casey White who tallied seven kills. Matthew Ctvrtlik also assisted the Crimson with a .400 hitting percentage and Riley Moore registered five blocks.

The Crimson were off to a strong start after a 6-3 run in the first set, however, the Highlanders fought back, coming within two points until a from Casey White gave the Crimson a 15-9 advantage. Johnsson tallied five kills in the first set, good for a .625 hitting percentage.

The second set started off strong for the Highlanders, going point-for-point until the teams were knotted at 16 apiece. Up 18-16, NJIT captilized on two Crimson attack errors to hold off the Crimson 19-17. Two kills from Dow brought the Crimson within one, 20-21. The Crimson capitalized on two attack errors from the Highlanders, taking back the set, 23-22. Harvard won the set after a kill from Casey White.

The first twelve points of the third set were neck and neck between the Crimson and the Highlanders, until a kill from Johnsson gave Harvard the advantage. NJIT fought back, coming within one point, at 13-14, but the Crimson held the Highlanders to a .192 hitting percentage. Johnsson added five kills and one block during the frame, while Moore added four blocks. Harvard registered a match-high hitting percentage, .526.

Harvard will travel to Connecticut to face Sacred Heart on Friday, March 3 at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on NEC Front Row.

The NJIT men’s volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision at EIVA opponent Harvard, despite senior Jabarry Goodridge‘s match-high 15 kills on Saturday afternoon.

The Highlanders (7-7) now sit tied for fourth with Harvard (5-6) in the EIVA standings with identical 3-3 conference records.

Raymond Kowalski was the only other Highlander with double-digit kills, tallying 11 while setter Ricardo Whitaker grabbed a game-high 31 assists and libero Shannon Heckman notched 12 digs for NJIT.

The Crimson led and kept the lead for the whole first set winning 25-20, even though the Highlanders recorded seven kills from senior Goodridge.

In the second frame, NJIT tied it up at 14 all with a service ace by Kowalski, and the set continued with each team battling back and forth until the last two points, both won by Harvard to win the set, 25-23, and go up, 2-0.

Harvard took the third set 25-18, recording a 3-0 sweep of visiting NJIT.

NJIT will return to action on March 9 when the Highlanders host non-conference opponent Coker in the Fleisher Athletic Center.  First spike is set for 7pm.
