The University of Houston Volleyball program closes its non-conference schedule and opens a three-match road swing with a 1 p.m. first serve at LSU on Saturday.

  • The Cougars (4-3) are coming off a 3-1 record in their recent four-match homestand. As part of the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup, Houston defeated Stetson, 3-1, in their home opener before falling 3-2 to McNeese on Friday. In the tournament finale, the Cougars bested Mississippi State, 3-1, to take runner-up honors. The Cougars added a 3-0 sweep of Prairie View A&Mon Wednesday.
  • Sophomore libero Katie Karbo and freshman Abby Irvine were each named to the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup All-Tournament Team for their respective efforts. Karbo, who was also named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll, averaged 5.77 digs per set and recorded seven service aces, while Irvine, who posted two double-doubles, averaged 5.77 assists and 2.23 digs per set with five service aces.
  • Houston is 14-15 (Sets: 45-55) all-time against LSU. The two programs last met in 2013 with the Tigers prevailing 3-1. That match also marked Head Coach Kaddie Platt’s first against LSU.
  • The Cougars lead the American Athletic Conference in service aces per set (1.90) and opponent hitting percentage (.135). Houston entered the week ranked ninth in the nation with 1.92 aces per set and 18th with a .139 opponent hitting percentage.
  • Karbo leads The American in digs (5.52) and ranks fourth in service aces per set (0.41). Senior middle blocker Brianna Gardner ranks eighth in hitting percentage (.321), while senior outside hitter Brianna Lynch ranks eighth in kills per set (3.10). Freshman setter Abby Irvine ranks third among freshmen in assists per set (6.21).

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

LSU

  • The Tigers enter the weekend with an 8-2 record with wins over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Northwestern, USF, Hartford, UConn, Iona, High Point and LIU-Brooklyn. However, LSU is coming off consecutive 3-1 losses to UNC and Baylor.
  • Taylor Bannister leads the Tigers with 3.03 kills per set, while Jacqui Armer averages 1.39 blocks per set. Setter Anna Zwiebel averages 9.19 assists per set, and Raigen Cianciulli averages 3.84 digs per set.
  • Head Coach Fran Flory is in her 20th season at the helm of LSU and 27th overall as a head coach.
  • The Tigers finished 9-20 overall and 4-14 in SEC play in 2016.

UP NEXT

The Cougars will continue their road swing and open American Athletic Conference play with trips to Tulsa (Sept. 22) and SMU (Sept. 24).
