Indian volleyball player Showkat Ahmad Dar died on Sunday afternoon after collapsing on the court during a match at Harnaag in Anantnag.

After playing the first set of the match, Showkat collapsed on the court in the 2nd set. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead-on-arrival of an apparent cardiac arrest.

Showkat was the only player from the Indian region of Kashmir called to March’s tryouts for the national U-20 team for the 2018 Asian U20 Championships that were held last week in Bahrain. The president of the state’s volleyball federation called a ‘condolence meeting’ to remember the player, including observing 2 minutes of silence and leading a prayer. The associate secretary of the Volleyball Federation of India, Kuldip Magorta, was among the attendees of that ceremony.
