Injuries & Illness Take Out Top Athletes From Australian Tour Finals

Chris McHugh and Damien Schumann propelled their way to a comeback over Americans David McKienzie and Ian Satterfield in the finals of the Australian Beach Volleyball Tour Finals.

With the withdrawal of Zachary Shubert and Cole Durant due to injury and illness, the finals of the event were blown wide open for the competition. Shubert and Durant were strong contenders for the Australian Tour title.

The finals took place at Sydney’s Manly Beach, with McHugh and Schumann forging their way to victory after dropping their first set 21-13. With McHugh staying strong at the net and Schumann playing strong defense, the pair was able to muster up a second set win 21-16. The third and deciding set was a tense battle with both teams feeling the heat of the finals. McHugh and Schumann took the lead early in the match and continued with it to victory 15-10.

The pair took victories at the World Tour event in Shepparton and the Four Nations Cup at Manly.

On the women’s side, Nikki Laird was also forced to withdrawal from competition due to injury and illness. Laird and partner Pheobe Bell were among the top favored to vie for the women’s title.

Louise Grice and Mariafe Artacho del Solar proved too strong for Alice and Jahannah Rohkamper, taking the pair out in straight sets. Grice and Artacho del Solar only dropped one set on the weekend.
