Iowa State has announced the hiring of a new assistant coach, Fiona Fonoti who will officially start with the program on March 12. Fonoti takes over for former associate head coach Dawn Sullivan who was hired as the UNLV head coach.
Fonoti has a strong background in volleyball including high school and club coach, and as an instructor, this all follows a successful career as a setter at Nebraska. Most recently, Fonoti was the assistant varsity girls coach at Punahou School in Hawaii as well as the setters coach at the Elite Setting Academy in Pearl City, Hawaii. Additionally, she spent time coaching at Pearl City High School and McKinley High School in Hawaii while also spending six years as the head coach for the Lil Spiker Academy.
In addition to her coaching career, Fonoti was a teacher at various high schools in Hawaii teaching math and special education.
As a player, Fonoti took over the setting role from her to be head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch at Nebraska following her graduation from the program. She was a three-time All-Big 12 First Team and three-time AVCA All-American selection from 1996-98. She also picked up Big 12 Player of the Year and was a finalist for NCAA Player of the Year and Honda Broderick Awards.
