The Italian men’s volleyball team earned the team of the year at the Gazzetta Sports Awards.

The Gazzetta Sports Awards are the highlight of the end of the year sports awards, as organized by Italy’s leading sports daily La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Italian squad won silver at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, silver at the FIVB World Cup and bronze at the European Championship. Coach Gianlorenzo Blengini and the team were in Milan to accept the award.

“What did we lack in Brazil? Winning the last match,” Blengini said after receiving the trophy. “Really, though, being given this award is truly emotional.”

Their silver medal at the Rio Olympic games was an improvement from London 2012 when they took bronze.
