A 3-0 sweep of Cuba on Sunday gave Poland their 3rd FIVB U21 Men’s World Championship title and first since 2003.
Neither of the teams at the top of the pile had any individually-outlandish hitters in the tournament, but instead they pushed ahead with depth. Poland had two players (Tomasz Fornal and Bartosz Kwolek) score over 100 points in the tournament, while Cuba had 3 (Miguel Suarez, Miguel Castro, and Osniel Hernandez).
Kwolek did, however, lead the tournament in success rate, landing 60.61% of his swings for points. That’s over 5 points better than the next-best hitter.
They all trailed the tournament’s leading scorer Adis Lagumdzija, who had 154 points in 29 sets (5.31/set) in the tournament. His team finished 10th out of 16 participating teams. Rasoul Aghchehli was just behind with 153 points in 36 sets (4.25/set).
In total, Poland played 47 games with their U21 team without a single loss. Jakub Kochanowski, without placing in the top 5 of any major category, was named the tournament MVP as the captain of the winning team. He had 10 points, including 4 aces, in the championship match.
The United States finished 14th out of 16 teams. They traditionally have not fared well in this tournament – they were 11th in 2013 and in 2015.
