While the #8 Kansas Jayhawks came up short in an epic 5-match loss to #6 Texas on Wednesday in front of a sold-out Horejsi Family Athletics Center crowd, it was still a history-making night in Lawrence. Senior AVCA All-American setter Ainise Havili had 50 assists on the night, which lifted her into 1st place in Kansas’ all-time record list, ending the night with 4,801.
The old record was set by Andi Rozum at 4,772
Havili has 888 assists through 75 sets and 19 matches played this season. That puts her on pace with the best assists/set average of her career (12,13/set) from her sophomore season). Depending on how deep the Jayhawks go into the NCAA tournament, she should have around another 500 assists this season. That would push her over 5,000 for her career and would land her 5th on the Big 12’s all-time career rankings.
While it would be a longshot for Havili to enter the all-time NCAA top 25 in this category, she will retire as one of the most prolific setters of the last decade – which overall has seen a steep decline in the number of assists/set for national leaders. As an indication of that, no new players have entered the all-time top 25 on that list since 2008.
