The 2016 Rio Olympic and 2017 FIVB Beach World Championship champion Kira Walkenhorst will sit out for a few month due to having surgery on her hip. Walkenhorst pairs with Laura Ludwig on the sand, to which the pairing has had much success from the Olympics to the FIVB World Tour.

The surgery was a minor operation that will help Walkenhorst be out on the sand during the crucial Olympic qualifying years, 2019 and 2020. This is what Walkenhorst is looking forward to as her and Ludwig “have a gold medal to defend every year.” According to Walkenhorst via her Facebook page, the surgery was a success and the doctors think she will be back in tip-top shape soon. This is the eighth surgery that Walkenhorst has had in her career as a beach volleyball player, so she knows how to manage the recovery to the fullest.

This past beach season was big for the German duo as they are coming off the success of winning the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, to which they won the 2017 FIVB World Tour Finals and the 2017 FIVB Beach World Championship.

At the start of 2017, Ludwig was out for the beginning of the beach season due to having shoulder surgery in the off-season. Walkenhorst will rehab and make her way back to the beach much the same as Ludwig did.
