Long Beach State’s top flight pair in Nele Barber and Rachel Nieto went 6-1 last week overall and 5-0 versus league foes to earn Big West Pairs Team of the Week honors.
Junior Nele Barber (Berlin, Germany/Marquette) and junior Rachel Nieto (Walnut Creek, Calif./Las Lomas HS) recorded a perfect 5-0 mark against Big West opposition to help the 49ers to a perfect 4-0 outing at the Big West Challenge. Two of those victories included 3-2 wins over Cal Poly, who was receiving votes in the national poll last week, and No. 5 Hawai‘i.
The junior pair won five of its six matches in straight sets and is currently riding a nine set win-streak.
The duo moved to 19-1 on the year and in doing so set a new LBSU record for most wins at No. 1 in a single season. Barber and Nieto also set a new program mark for most career wins at No. 1 with 25.
This is the second award for the pair this season and is the second for Long Beach State.
