2017 FIVB World Tour Season Opener

The international volleyball federation’s World Tour for beach volleyball will open this week with the Fort Lauderdale Major.

FIVB, which governs volleyball in its indoor, beach and grass forms, will host the series, also known as the Swatch Major Series. Fort Lauderdale’s event is one of six stops on the tour, which will extend through this summer.

Series Stops

  • Fort Lauderdale, FL, USA, Feb 7-12
  • Porec, Croatia, Jun 27-July 2
  • Gstaad, Switzerland, July 4-9
  • FIVB World Championships, Vienna, Austria, July 28-Aug 6
  • Hamburg, Germany, Aug 8-13
  • Swatch World Tour Finals, location TBA, Aug 22-27

The Fort Lauderdale stop is considered a 5-star tournament, which puts it in relatively exclusive company among major volleyball tournaments. The tournament will take the spotlight, literally. Team USA reports that 18 evening matches will take place under the lights of Fort Lauderdale’s stadium. NBC2 will broadcast the women’s final on Sunday.

A change in FIVB regulations allow the host nation extra wild card entrants, which means the United States will get to enter 8 male pairs and 8 female pairs, as opposed to six teams from previous years. You can check out the U.S. roster here.
