Long Beach State’s top flight pair in Rachel Nieto and Nele Barber earned the Big West Pairs Team of the Week award, the first first for the Beach this season.
Junior Rachel Nieto (Walnut Creek, Calif./Las Lomas HS) and junior Nele Barber (Berlin, Germany/Marquette) went a perfect 6-0 last week against five top 15 opponents including No. 9 Stetson, No. 2 Florida State, No. 7 Georgia State, No. 12 Florida International and No. 10 LSU. The duo’s efforts helped the Beach go 5-1 overall on the week, with the team’s only loss coming to the Seminoles. The tandem however, won that match in straight sets, defeating Leigh Andrew and Brooke Kuhlman 21-17, 21-16.
The pair won five of their six matches in straight sets, taking 12 of 13 sets played to help LBSU improve to 7-1 on the year.
